About Pitman, New Jersey

In 1871, land was chosen in both Glassboro and Mantua Township to be set aside for a Methodist summer camp meeting. The New Jersey Conference Camp Meeting Association was officially chartered and given authority over the land grant in 1872, and began planning the campground and organizing meetings. The land had an auditorium located on a central meeting ground, and twelve roads originated from the central area as spokes on a wheel. This area became known as the Pitman Grove, and while worshipers' tents originally lined each of the twelve roads, cottages slowly replaced the tents and formed the foundation of the town of Pitman. By the 1880s, the number of cottages had climbed to 400 and residents had begun staying year-round, both of which led to the establishment of the first public school in 1884. By 1887, businesses had cropped up north of the Grove in an area then-named Arbutus Hill, and in 1892, Alcyon Park was established. The Grove directors resisted the secularization of the Methodist retreat, but in 1904, Grove residents voted 122 to 35 for incorporation as an autonomous borough. On May 24, 1905, Governor of New Jersey Edward C. Stokes signed a law granting the incorporation. The Pitman Grove was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977. Until August 2014, Pitman was a dry town. In 2015, the borough council authorized an ordinance permitting liquor licenses and a pair of local breweries opened in Pitman's Uptown business district in 2016 under the terms of a state law that allows the sale of beer by the glass in tasting rooms. In November 2016, nearly 65% of voters approved a non-binding referendum allowing the issuance of liquor licenses.

We recently bought a house and didn’t have a fenced in yard for our dog. I reached out to numerous fence companies. Deptford Fence responded to me the quickest and were by FAR the most responsive and easy to deal with. After getting multiple quotes they provided me a couple of options and ultimately were the less expensive option. Bryan and Heather were so helpful and thoughtful with the design and tricky layout of my new fence as we had a view of a golf course and sat up on a retaining wall with underground utilities. They found solutions to all of these problems and rushed material for us so we could give our dog a yard to play in more quickly. The crew finished in great time and took extra care to do a clean install. Even when I noticed one post next to my structure left a small opening that worried me about my dog getting out, Bryan and the Deptford crew didn’t hesitate to say “no problem at all, we’ll move it closer”. I would highly recommend using Deptford for any fencing needs. Thank you.

Great Job taking down our old fence and installing the new fence. The neighbor’s wanted to know who installed our fence, saying that they would get them to install their fence. Since than, they have installed our next door neighbor’s fence and my wife’s nephews fence. We had a cap on the fence post come off, the next day they replaced that cap and checked to make sure that every cap was secured with glue. Very nice employees! Pricing was very competitive, quality of workmanship was over the top! John S

My husband and I are thrilled with our new vinyl fence that Deptford fence installed. We enclosed our backyard with a 6-foot vinyl privacy fence with two separate entrances and added a vinyl picket fence to the sides of our property. From start to finish, everyone was extremely attentive and friendly. After shopping around, we found that Deptford Fence was on the higher end for the price, but it was worth every penny. Their responsiveness and availability was outstanding and they made the planning process stress free. I primarily spoke with Michelle who made sure we were comfortable throughout the entire process. Install day was also a breeze and the guys worked super efficiently. I can’t recommend Deptford Fence enough.
