In the quaint town of Crum Lynne, Pennsylvania, lies a hidden gem for do-it-yourself enthusiasts and professional builders alike: the local hardware store. This charming establishment is well-stocked with all manner of fence-building materials, from the humblest nail to the most robust hinge. Here, one can find everything needed to erect a sturdy barrier or revitalize an aging boundary.

As you wander down aisles lined with bins and boxes, your gaze may fall upon a plethora of fasteners – nails in all lengths and diameters, screws with various threads and heads. These seemingly insignificant items are, in fact, the linchpins that hold together any good fence. They come in different metals like stainless steel or coated varieties meant to withstand the relentless Pennsylvania weather.

Turning your attention to movement, hinges become the central focus. The range available at this shop ensures that gates will swing smoothly and securely. Whether you need something heavy-duty for large gates or smaller ones for pedestrian access points, there's no shortage of options here.

Moreover, this hardware haven doesn't just provide parts; it offers wisdom as well. We cannot say enough concerning Philz Landscape. One call and I connected with Pat. He met with us for a project which entailed removal of a partial cinder block porch with iron poles and remodeled an entire porch. We are pleased with the work performed. We found found that Pat was a man of his word and committed to pleasing us with minor finishes. I would highly recommend this company. Sincerely, Ricky and Donna L Jones

Angi provided me with several contractors, I received estimates but chose Philz Landscaping (even after coming in higher) because he satisfied with his estimate and start date our fervent desire to complete the project before winter set in. Alex, Javier set the example of professionalism in setting up the area to remove fencing and gate, installed vinyl fence with double gate (assisted by Carlos), removed all debris, left my yard spotless and we are extremely satisfied with the new fence and gate. Questions we had were answered (Helena, Phil) promptly and Alex, Javier went above and beyond ensuring my wife’s concerns were taken care of; I want again to Thank the team at Philz Landscaping and recommend highly to perform your project.

Had Phil and his workers come by my house to work on the backyard in May this year. Eliminate weeds, regrade soil and replant grass seed. 158 feet worth of backyard which he estimated $1600 to do. There was a hiccup with his office and scheduling and he wasn't even aware of the set date in mid-May. He rescheduled for the week after and took off $100 for inconvenience. His crew shows up and does the job and weeks after, grass grew....but not fully in corners of the yard. I called him back, voicemail immediately. Got in touch with his office and they said they would pass the message. His response times are atrocious and I told him about the patches in the grass. He says "no problem I'll send guys to evaluate and re-seed". They show up and do the job again. By mid-July, weeds are growing in very strong and grass is dying at exceedingly high rate despite me watering. I called him back and he says "that's odd, I'll come by this afternoon or tomorrow" in September when I finally get a hold of him. He never shows up or responds to texts or further calls. The photos below are post-lawn work with visible patches and weeds. I had to spend additional monies on top soil, grass seed and water to correct the loss of 50% of the lawn!! If you want an overpriced job not done right, Phil is your guy!!

Philz Landscaping built 2 patios on my property. One is flagstone and the other is pavers with a retaining wall. Both are absolutely beautiful. Working with Phil and his team has been a great experience. I highly recommend this company to anyone looking for reliability, quality, and reasonable pricing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Given Crum Lynne, Pennsylvanias climate, which experiences a range of weather conditions including rain and snow, it is important to use galvanized or stainless steel hardware for wooden fences. These materials resist rust and corrosion, ensuring longevity and durability of the fence. Coated screws and nails can also be used as they provide an extra layer of protection against moisture.
The size and type of nails or screws youll need depend on the specific dimensions and types of wood you are using for your fence. As a general rule, nails or screws should be at least three times longer than the thickness of the boards they will secure. For example, if youre using 1-inch thick boards, choose nails or screws that are at least 3 inches long. Screws offer more holding power than nails and are generally preferred for securing pickets to rails; ring-shank nails can also be effective due to their increased grip.
Heavy-duty T-hinges are commonly recommended for wooden gate installations because they provide strong support and can handle the weight of a typical wood gate well. The size should be proportionate to the gates width and weight; larger gates require bigger hinges. Additionally, spring-loaded or self-closing hinges might be considered if there is a need for the gate to close automatically—for instance, around pools or pet areas for safety reasons.
