Slipboard fences Crum Lynne, Pennsylvania

In the quaint, industrious community of Crum Lynne, nestled within Pennsylvania's diverse tapestry of towns, a unique feature stands out amongst its residential and pastoral landscapes: slipboard fences. These traditional structures are a testament to both function and aesthetic simplicity, representing an enduring legacy of rural craftsmanship that continues to punctuate the region's scenery.

The essence of slipboard fencing lies in its distinctive design. Unlike other forms of boundary markers that rely on nails or fasteners, slipboard fences employ horizontal boards slipped between vertical posts. This ingenious construction allows for effortless assembly and disassembly, a characteristic that proved invaluable to farmers seeking flexible enclosure solutions for their livestock.

Historically speaking, the origin of these fences can be traced back to agricultural practices where functionality reigned supreme. Farmers in Crum Lynne and similar locales needed durable yet adaptable barriers capable of withstanding the changing seasons and the shifting needs associated with crop rotation and animal grazing patterns.

Despite their practical origins, slipboard fences have transcended their utilitarian roots to become emblematic features within Crum Lynne’s landscape. The sight of these fences evokes a sense of nostalgia; they are visual echoes from yesteryear when life moved at a slower pace and personal craftsmanship was highly valued.

Today, while modern materials have offered alternative fencing options like vinyl or metal counterparts, there remains an undeniable charm associated with wooden slipboard fences. They continue to be favored by many residents for their natural appearance which harmonizes seamlessly with Pennsylvania’s lush countryside.

Yet beyond aesthetics and tradition lies an environmental consideration: wood is a renewable resource when sourced responsibly. As society becomes increasingly conscious about sustainable living practices, slipboard fences offer an environmentally-friendly choice compared to less biodegradable options.

It should also be noted that maintaining these wooden structures requires commitment – regular inspection and treatment against weathering or pest damage is essential for preserving their integrity over time. However, this maintenance fosters a connection between the fence owner and the land they inhabit; it is an active participation in one's environment rather than passive occupancy.

In conclusion, the slipboard fences dotting the periphery of fields and homesteads in Crum Lynne are more than mere property demarcations; they symbolize continuity amidst change – standing resilient as modern advancements encroach upon bucolic settings. Through them flows a narrative thread weaving together past generations’ ingenuity with contemporary values around sustainability and beauty in simplicity – making them cherished landmarks within this Pennsylvanian enclave.

Angi provided me with several contractors, I received estimates but chose Philz Landscaping (even after coming in higher) because he satisfied with his estimate and start date our fervent desire to complete the project before winter set in. Alex, Javier set the example of professionalism in setting up the area to remove fencing and gate, installed vinyl fence with double gate (assisted by Carlos), removed all debris, left my yard spotless and we are extremely satisfied with the new fence and gate. Questions we had were answered (Helena, Phil) promptly and Alex, Javier went above and beyond ensuring my wife’s concerns were taken care of; I want again to Thank the team at Philz Landscaping and recommend highly to perform your project.

Had Phil and his workers come by my house to work on the backyard in May this year. Eliminate weeds, regrade soil and replant grass seed. 158 feet worth of backyard which he estimated $1600 to do. There was a hiccup with his office and scheduling and he wasn't even aware of the set date in mid-May. He rescheduled for the week after and took off $100 for inconvenience. His crew shows up and does the job and weeks after, grass grew....but not fully in corners of the yard. I called him back, voicemail immediately. Got in touch with his office and they said they would pass the message. His response times are atrocious and I told him about the patches in the grass. He says "no problem I'll send guys to evaluate and re-seed". They show up and do the job again. By mid-July, weeds are growing in very strong and grass is dying at exceedingly high rate despite me watering. I called him back and he says "that's odd, I'll come by this afternoon or tomorrow" in September when I finally get a hold of him. He never shows up or responds to texts or further calls. The photos below are post-lawn work with visible patches and weeds. I had to spend additional monies on top soil, grass seed and water to correct the loss of 50% of the lawn!! If you want an overpriced job not done right, Phil is your guy!!

Philz Landscaping built 2 patios on my property. One is flagstone and the other is pavers with a retaining wall. Both are absolutely beautiful. Working with Phil and his team has been a great experience. I highly recommend this company to anyone looking for reliability, quality, and reasonable pricing.
